The First Roll
Before sunrise, Thokozile would begin her walk—two hours each way—balancing a heavy bucket of water on her head. Her back ached, her children often missed school to help, and the days felt endlessly consumed by the search for water.
The first time she used an EcoRoller, she filled it with 70 litres and rolled it home in just one trip. That morning, her children went to class on time. That evening, she cooked, gardened, and rested. Everything changed with a single roll.

The ECOroller is a 70-litre water transport device designed to make collecting water safer, faster, and less physically demanding. Instead of balancing a heavy bucket on the head or back, as is common in many rural African communities, the ECOroller allows women to roll a durable plastic barrel along the ground with ease. Built with a sturdy steel handle and tough enough to withstand rough terrain, it carries nearly four times more water than a standard bucket, reducing the number of trips needed. By eliminating the strain of carrying heavy loads, it helps prevent long-term injuries to the spine, neck, and joints.
Just as importantly, it frees up valuable hours each day—time that can be redirected toward education, farming, work, or family life. More than a container, the ECOroller is a simple, practical innovation that turns water collection into a manageable task and opens the door to greater opportunity.
